Johnny Taylor (b. Cobourg, Ontario, 1973) is a contemporary abstract painter based in Queens, New York. Best known for his large scale works that merge natural elements with architectural forms, Taylor’s practice is rooted in abstraction, relying on mark-making in reaction to unconventional surfaces carefully considered to enhance the final outcome of his compositions. Taylor paints spontaneously without preliminary sketches, using a combination of oils, pigment sticks and impasto mediums, applying them with a variety of hand tools. While his imagery at times conveys recognizable subjects, his practice remains firmly abstract resulting in distinct bodies of work that capture the breadth of his inspirations.
He has been included in numerous solo and group shows Including Splash The Pendulum Gallery Vancouver BC, Hidden Cities Bermudez Projects Los Angeles CA, Trans-Arts Festival Tokyo Japan, Spaceland Bermudez Projects Los Angeles CA, Kinetic Zen, Miller Gallery Edmonton AB, The Big Tiny Show District Gallery Knoxville TN, Tokyo Lights Bugera Matheson Gallery Edmonton AB.
In 2015, Taylor was awarded a residency at 3331 Chiyoda Arts Centre in Tokyo. He was also a merit scholarship candidate at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2003. His work has been featured in Ion Magazine, The Vancouver Sun, The Vancouver Observer, Scout Magazine, and Artweek LA. His paintings are held in private and public collections across North and South America, Europe, and Japan.
